The SMA Sunny Boy STORAGE series comprises battery inverters (AC-coupled) designed for use with energy storage systems in consumer installations - particularly where PV systems are already operational, aiming to increase self-consumption and energy independence. Intelligent management of energy flows between the home, the grid, and the battery, along with stable operation under varying loads, is key. Unlike PV inverters, the Sunny Boy Storage lacks an MPPT for DC modules, so it does not optimize string performance regarding shading or different orientations. Instead, it focuses on efficient AC-DC conversion during battery charging and discharging. In practice, the high European efficiency means fewer losses under typical operating conditions, resulting in more real energy available at home. Additionally, features include monitoring via Sunny Portal and SMA Energy App, offering insights into consumption and storage status, along with communication (e.g., LAN/WiFi depending on the version). The series is primarily targeted at single-family homes and small commercial properties, where compatibility with selected energy storage systems, conformity certificates, and a reasonable manufacturer warranty matter.

Pros and cons

What owners get
Retrofit AC-coupling without replacing the PV inverter

The AC-coupled architecture allows a battery energy storage system to be added to any existing PV installation without replacing the solar inverter. This is a key advantage in the retrofit market, where swapping out the PV inverter would incur a cost of PLN 2,000-5,000 and potentially void the existing warranty.

Simultaneous connection of up to 3 battery strings

The SBS is among the first battery inverters on the market (since the 2nd generation) to support multi-string battery connection - the ability to simultaneously connect up to three separate high-voltage battery modules (e.g., BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS/HVM or LG Chem RESU-H, 300-600 V DC range). This provides the flexibility to incrementally expand storage capacity without replacing the inverter.

IP65 ingress protection - outdoor installation ready

The IP65-rated enclosure allows installation on an exterior wall or in a garage without an additional protective enclosure, reducing installation costs compared to IP54-rated devices (e.g., select Victron or Fronius models) that require an outdoor cabinet or indoor siting.

10-year warranty upon registration (extendable)

The standard 5-year warranty extends to 10 years upon registration in Sunny Portal, with an optional extension to 20 years. By comparison, most AC-coupled competitors (e.g., GoodWe GW-BT series) offer 5-10 years with no extension option, making the SBS more attractive for long-term investments.

Monitoring via Sunny Portal + SMA Energy App

An integrated web server and native integration with the Sunny Portal platform and SMA Energy App provide real-time visibility into energy flows, battery SOC, and self-consumption statistics - with no need to purchase a separate energy manager (market value ~PLN 300-600). SMA also offers proactive service notifications upon detection of operational anomalies.

Trade-offs
AC-coupling losses: ~3-4 percentage points vs. DC-coupled

In an AC-coupled architecture, PV energy undergoes three conversion stages (DC→AC→DC→AC), whereas DC-coupled solutions (Fronius Symo Hybrid, SolarEdge StorEdge) require only two. The combined efficiency of the SBS (~96.5%) with a typical PV inverter (~97%) yields approximately 93.6% round-trip efficiency - 3-4 percentage points below peak DC-coupled systems, which achieve 96-97%.

Single-phase only - limited backup capability

The SBS is a single-phase device; in backup mode (Secure Power Supply), it supplies only one phase at up to 2 kW (SPS mode) or up to 3.7 kW from the battery. In homes with a three-phase grid connection or three-phase loads (heat pump, EV charger), additional switching automation or a second inverter is required, increasing the overall system cost.

About the SUNNY BOY STORAGE series

6 answered

These answers cover the whole series. Where a figure differs, the specification above is this model's own.

Is the SMA Sunny Boy Storage series still available for purchase?
The SMA Sunny Boy Storage series has been discontinued and replaced by the newer Sunny Boy Smart Energy line (available since 2024). Some distributors may still hold units in stock; however, SMA officially directs new customers to the successor product. Before purchasing, it is advisable to confirm availability with an authorized SMA partner and to review the warranty terms applicable to stock units.
Which batteries are compatible with the SMA Sunny Boy Storage inverter?
The Sunny Boy Storage is compatible exclusively with high-voltage lithium-ion batteries (approx. 360 V DC) from SMA's certified compatibility list. Supported models include the BYD B-Box Premium HVS 5.1, 7.7, and 10.2, BYD B-Box Premium HVM 8.3-22.1, LG Chem RESU7H and RESU10H (Type C), and the Tesla Powerwall. Up to three batteries may be connected in parallel to a single inverter. Prior to purchase, always verify the current list of approved batteries on the SMA service portal.
Can the SMA Sunny Boy Storage be retrofitted to an existing photovoltaic system?
Yes - this is the primary advantage of the AC-coupled architecture employed in the Sunny Boy Storage. The inverter connects on the AC side and therefore does not interfere with the existing PV inverter or the DC wiring of the PV array. As a result, a battery storage system can be added to any operational photovoltaic installation without redesigning it, which significantly reduces both the cost and installation time of a retrofit upgrade.
What is the manufacturer's warranty on the SMA Sunny Boy Storage?
The standard factory warranty for the Sunny Boy Storage is 5 years. Upon registering the unit with the SMA Service Center, the warranty can be extended free of charge by an additional 5 years, for a total of 10 years of coverage. SMA also offers paid extended warranty packages that can stretch protection to up to 20 years. Eligibility for the extension requires registration within the specified period from the date of purchase.
Does the SMA Sunny Boy Storage provide backup power during a grid blackout?
Yes, the Sunny Boy Storage is equipped with the Backup Lite function, which supplies emergency power of up to approximately 2,000 W in the event of a grid outage. However, the switchover to island mode is manual, not automatic. This means that in the event of a sudden grid failure, user intervention is required to activate battery-backed power. If fully automatic switchover is a priority, it is worth considering a newer model that includes automatic backup activation.
How does the SMA Sunny Boy Storage differ from a conventional photovoltaic inverter?
The Sunny Boy Storage is a battery inverter, not a solar inverter. It does not feature MPPT inputs for connecting PV modules and does not optimize the operation of PV string configurations. Its sole function is the efficient AC-to-DC conversion during battery charging - whether from the grid or from PV surplus - and DC-to-AC conversion during battery discharge to supply household loads. All energy flow management between the PV system, the grid, the home, and the storage system takes place at the AC level, making it the ideal solution for retrofit applications.
