Light for its output, no clear weak spot
The JA Solar JAT54S41 LR (Black n-type Monofacial Module) series was designed with rooftop installations in mind, focusing on maximizing energy production from limited surfaces and stable performance over years. The use of TOPCon n-type cells translates into extremely low light-induced degradation susceptibility, enabling the module to maintain high efficiency in real-world conditions. In practice, this means more predictable yields and fewer disappointments after a few seasons.
Another noteworthy feature is the monofacial roof-optimized construction - easier to design and less sensitive to installation errors compared to bifacial solutions. This series offers optimized performance under low irradiance, which aids on cloudy days and in the morning and evening, when many modules noticeably lose efficiency. Additionally, better performance at higher temperatures supports energy production during the summer months when the roof heats up significantly.
This is an excellent choice for single-family homes, multi-family buildings, and aesthetically demanding projects where All-Black appearance is key, without compromising on technology.
Ranking
Signals from the data
Residential, commercial and hot-climate.
Top 1% of the TOPCon 450-500 W segment, against a median of 52.2. Ranked 198th in the whole database.
Top 3% of the TOPCon 450-500 W segment, against a median of -0.290. Ranked 511th in the whole database.
Top 20% of the TOPCon 450-500 W segment, against a median of 225.2.
The 22.8–24% efficiency range outperforms all listed peer comparables: Sunket SKT460~480M10-120D3 peaks at 22.24%, Shinson S-Blade at 22.24%, and First Solar Series 6 Plus Bifacial at only 19%. Even the bottom of the series (22.8%) beats the direct competition by more than 0.5 percentage points, translating to measurably higher annual energy yield per unit of roof area.
N-type TOPCon cells are immune to LID (Light-Induced Degradation) and LeTID, which cause 1–2% first-few-weeks power loss in p-type PERC modules. Annual degradation for TOPCon is approximately 0.4% vs. 0.6–0.8% for PERC (NREL/JA Solar 2024 data), resulting in several additional percentage points of cumulative yield over a 30-year asset life.
The manufacturer guarantees ≥87.4% of nominal power after 30 years at ≤0.4% annual degradation. This surpasses the 25-year power warranties common among most Tier 1 peers. The product (materials and workmanship) warranty is 25 years.
JA Solar has maintained its position on the BNEF bankable manufacturers list continuously for multiple years and reported annual manufacturing capacity exceeding 100 GW as of Q1 2026. Tier 1 status streamlines non-recourse project financing and reduces residual risk for investors and insurance underwriters.
Full-black aesthetics (black frame, black cells, black backsheet) are achieved at up to 24% front-side efficiency, with no technological compromise typically associated with lower-cost All Black modules built on older PERC cells. The monofacial architecture simplifies racking design and eliminates the albedo-management requirements that can introduce mounting errors on bifacial installations.
The monofacial construction cannot harvest energy reflected from the ground or rooftop substrate. On flat-roof installations with light-colored ballast or membrane (albedo >15%), a bifacial module — even one with lower front-side efficiency such as First Solar Series 6 Plus (19%) — may capture an additional 5–12% generation from the rear. The gap is negligible on pitched rooftops, but for flat-roof projects a bifacial LCOE comparison is warranted.
- Efficiency of 23.0% matches the TOPCon 450-500W median
- 230.2 W/m² power density - 5.0 W/m² more than TOPCon 450-500W median (225.2 W/m²), more power per roof area
- Temperature coefficient of -0.26%/°C vs median -0.29%/°C means ~1% less power loss at 65°C
- At 19.3 kg, this panel is 4.7 kg lighter than TOPCon 450-500W median (24.0 kg) - easier handling during installation
- In the top 14% for efficiency among all TOPCon panels
