The SolarEdge HD-Wave series are grid-tie inverters designed for use with power optimizers. This allows maximum power point tracking to occur at the module level, while the inverter focuses on DC-AC conversion. In practice, this translates to better performance under partial shading, dirt accumulation, or panel differences, along with high design flexibility-it simplifies connecting modules across different roof pitches and orientations without typical power-matching losses.

A key advantage is the HD-Wave topology, which improves the sinusoidal waveform quality and enables very high European efficiency-meaning truly better energy production in typical operating conditions in Poland, not just in a lab setting. The series offers panel-level monitoring via the SolarEdge platform and convenient setup through SetApp, with communication via Ethernet and wireless solutions (depending on configuration).

StorEdge/energy-ready versions can work with energy storage systems in the SolarEdge ecosystem, making them an excellent choice for modern residential and small commercial installations. The standard warranty is 12 years, with the option to extend it.

Pros and cons

5 positive · 2 caution
What owners get
Record-Breaking 99% CEC Efficiency

The HD-Wave series was the world's first inverter to achieve a 99% CEC (California Energy Commission) weighted efficiency rating, surpassing typical Tier-1 string inverters (96-97%). In practice, this translates to a real-world annual energy yield improvement of 3-7% with no additional capital investment.

Module-Level Monitoring

Integration with P-series power optimizers enables per-module performance monitoring through the mySolarEdge platform. Faults, degradation, or shading on individual panels can be diagnosed remotely, significantly reducing the need for on-site service calls.

Shading Tolerance and Mismatch Mitigation

Module-level MPPT performed by power optimizers eliminates the weakest-link effect within a string. On typical residential rooftops with chimneys, skylights, or complex roof geometries, this results in energy yields comparable to unshaded installations.

Compact, Lightweight Enclosure

HD-Wave units weigh approximately 9-11 kg (e.g., SE5000H at 9.6 kg), compared to 15-25 kg for comparable legacy string inverters. Single-technician installation is feasible, lowering overall BoS labor costs.

12-Year Warranty Extendable to 25 Years

The standard 12-year warranty exceeds the segment benchmark (SMA Sunny Boy - 5 years, Fronius Primo - 5 years standard). Optional paid extensions to 20 or 25 years provide long-term investment protection over the full system lifecycle.

Trade-offs
Series Discontinued (2023)

The HD-Wave series was officially superseded by the SolarEdge Home Wave in 2022-2023. For new installations, this means limited availability of replacement units, increasing risk of spare-parts shortages beyond 2025, and no further firmware updates for this product line.

Mandatory Power Optimizers - Higher CAPEX

The HD-Wave inverter is non-operational without P-series power optimizers - this is a system requirement, not an option. For a typical 8 kWp installation (~20 modules), this adds approximately PLN 3,000-4,000 (PLN 150-200 per optimizer), raising total CAPEX by 15-25% compared to string-only solutions without optimization (e.g., Fronius Primo, SMA Sunny Boy).

About the SolarEdge HD-Wave series

6 answered

These answers cover the whole series. Where a figure differs, the specification above is this model's own.

Does the SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter require power optimizers, and why?
Yes, the HD-Wave series is designed to operate exclusively with SolarEdge power optimizers. Each panel is paired with its own maximum power point tracking (MPPT) device, which ensures that shading on a single module, differences in roof orientation, or soiling do not reduce the output of the entire array. The inverter itself handles only the DC-to-AC conversion, allowing it to achieve very high efficiency while simplifying the overall system design.
What is the European efficiency of the SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter, and what does it mean in practice?
SolarEdge HD-Wave inverters achieve a European efficiency of approximately 97.3% for the 2.2-6 kW models, while higher-power variants reach up to 99% weighted efficiency. European efficiency measures real-world performance under typical partly cloudy irradiance conditions representative of Central European climates, rather than peak laboratory conditions. In practice, this translates into more kilowatt-hours generated annually compared with inverters of lower efficiency ratings.
Does the SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter operate reliably during harsh Polish winters?
Yes, the HD-Wave series is rated for an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +60 °C, so Polish winter conditions pose no operational issues. The inverter will start up after sunrise even at very low ambient temperatures. It is also worth noting that on cold, clear winter days photovoltaic panels can actually achieve higher efficiency than in summer, meaning the system makes effective use of available solar irradiance throughout the year.
What warranty does the SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter carry, and can it be extended?
The standard manufacturer's warranty is 12 years. SolarEdge offers extended warranty options of 20 or 25 years, making it one of the longest warranty programs available in the inverter market. The warranty covers manufacturing defects and device replacement. When planning an installation, it is advisable to consider the extended warranty upfront, as the cost is significantly lower than a potential inverter replacement after the initial 12-year period.
Can the SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter be connected to a home energy storage system?
Yes, but this requires the StorEdge variant or a unit designated as energy-ready. These HD-Wave versions support batteries within the SolarEdge ecosystem - such as the LG Chem RESU or the SolarEdge Home Battery - and manage both charging and discharging within a single monitoring platform. Standard HD-Wave models without the StorEdge designation do not include this functionality, so it is important to select the appropriate variant from the outset when designing an installation that includes battery storage.
How is the SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter commissioned - is the installation and configuration process complex?
The HD-Wave series is commissioned using the SetApp smartphone application, eliminating the need for an external display or laptop. The inverter is very lightweight (approximately 9.5 kg), making single-person installation straightforward. Communication with the monitoring platform is established via Ethernet or wirelessly, depending on the site configuration. Commissioning and configuration are intended to be performed by a certified installer; however, the process itself is quick and intuitive.
