The Fronius Primo series comprises single-phase grid-tie inverters designed for residential installations, where reliable operation, easy installation, and comprehensive diagnostics are essential. What sets them apart is their transformerless construction and the SnapINverter mounting system, which simplifies service and installation both indoors and outdoors, even in challenging weather conditions. The application of two independent MPPTs facilitates optimization of energy yields from two roof sections, different orientations, or partial shading, without complicating the design. High European efficiency translates to lower losses under typical operating conditions, resulting in genuinely better annual energy production. Additional benefits include the built-in data recorder and web server, as well as WiFi and Ethernet connectivity supporting Solar.web and Modbus protocols, making monitoring, integration with automation systems, and energy meters easier. This is not a hybrid inverter, so it does not charge an energy storage system directly; however, it performs excellently in classic consumer-level installations and can be integrated into expanded systems with external solutions. The series includes a complete set of safety features (including AFCI and rapid shutdown) and a standard long-term warranty with an option for extension.

Pros and cons

What owners get
SnapINverter system - installation without specialized tools

The SnapINverter mounting mechanism allows for mounting the inverter on the wall and connecting the wiring without the need to hold the device in place - reducing installation time and simplifying future maintenance both indoors and outdoors (IP65). This unique feature sets the series apart from the competition (SMA Sunny Boy, Huawei SUN2000-L1), where the standard is block mounting without a hinge system.

Two independent MPPT systems, with a power range of 3.8-15 kW

Two independent MPP points allow for the use of two separate strings of panels with different orientations or inclines without cross-over losses. In the single-phase range up to 10 kW, many competitors (e.g., Sungrow SG10RS, Growatt MIN 10KTL) only offer 1 or 2 MPPT with a narrower input voltage range.

Built-in monitoring: recorder, web server, WiFi + Ethernet

Unlike many lower-priced inverters (Growatt, Sofar Solar), the Fronius Primo features an integrated data logger, its own web server, and WiFi and Ethernet connectivity, eliminating the need to purchase an external data logger. Integration with the Solar.web platform and support for Modbus TCP/RTU allows for monitoring and integration with building automation systems.

AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) and rapid shutdown as standard

The built-in arc fault detection (AFC) function and rapid shutdown meet the requirements of NEC 2017/2020 and are increasingly required by local building codes. Comparable, more affordable inverters like the SMA Sunny Boy 3.0-7.7 offer these features as optional or in more expensive versions.

Peak efficiency up to 97.0% and input voltage range up to 690 V DC

The declared peak efficiency of 97.0% (according to Fronius datasheet) at a maximum DC input voltage of 655-690 V allows for flexible design of string configurations. The transformerless design eliminates losses associated with a transformer and reduces the weight of the device to below 22 kg (8.2 kW model: 21.5 kg).

Trade-offs
The series has been discontinued (starting in 2025).

All Fronius Primo models (3.8-15 kW) are listed as [Discontinued] by authorized distributors (Solar Electric Supply, NAZ Solar Electric). The manufacturer has replaced the series with the Primo GEN24/GEN24 Plus models. This means limited availability of new units, decreasing stock levels of spare parts, and a potential risk of reduced technical support and firmware updates within a 5-10-year timeframe.

The European efficiency rating (~95.95%) is lower than that of the SMA Sunny Boy.

Independent comparisons indicate that the European Fronius Primo system has an efficiency of approximately 95.95%, while the SMA Sunny Boy (series 3-7.7 kW) achieves approximately 97.33% (Clean Energy Reviews, Solaris-shop). This difference of approximately 1.4% translates into measurable losses in real-world conditions for installations above 8 kWp.

Lack of native support for energy storage systems

The Primo is a pure grid-tie inverter - it does not have a DC input for batteries or a backup output. Owners of installations planning to add a battery storage system will need to purchase a separate hybrid inverter or replace their Primo with a GEN24 Plus, which would incur additional costs. Direct competitors such as SolarEdge SE with Energy Hub or Huawei SUN2000-L1 support battery storage without requiring a replacement inverter.

About the Fronius Primo series

6 answered

These answers cover the whole series. Where a figure differs, the specification above is this model's own.

Is the Fronius Primo inverter suitable for installations with two roof sections facing different directions?
Yes, the Fronius Primo series is equipped with 2 independent MPPT trackers, which allows you to connect two rows of panels with different orientations or inclines and independently optimize the output from each. This solution is also effective in situations with partial shading of one section, as problems on one MPPT do not affect the performance of the other.
What is the warranty on the Fronius Primo inverter, and how can it be extended?
The standard factory warranty is 2 years, but it is extended to 10 years after free registration of the device on the Solar.web portal. The first 5 years cover the cost of parts, shipping, and service (Fronius Plus warranty), while the next 5 years cover only the cost of parts. It is advisable to register the inverter as soon as possible after purchase to take advantage of this offer.
Can the Fronius Primo inverter be installed outdoors?
Yes, the inverter has an IP65 degree of protection, which means it is completely protected against dust and water ingress from any direction. The SnapINverter mounting system simplifies both indoor and outdoor installation and maintenance, whether on a building facade or in an outdoor enclosure. The manufacturer designed this series with the typical European weather conditions in mind.
Does the Fronius Primo support energy storage, and can it be expanded with a battery?
The Fronius Primo is a grid-tie inverter without hybrid functionality, meaning it does not directly charge batteries. This may not be the best choice if your priority is to store energy in the future. If you plan to add batteries, a newer Fronius GEN24 Primo would be a better option, as it has a built-in DC output for managing energy storage.
How does the Fronius Primo handle monitoring, and is a separate data logger required?
The inverter has a built-in data logger and web server, so an additional data logger is not required. WiFi and Ethernet connectivity allows remote monitoring of production via the Solar.web platform, as well as integration with home automation systems or energy meters using the Modbus TCP protocol. Everything can be configured through a web browser, without the need for additional software.
Is the Fronius Primo series still available for sale?
The Fronius Primo series has been discontinued. Fronius has ceased production of these models and is focusing on the successor, the Fronius GEN24 Primo, which offers expanded capabilities, including energy storage system support. New Primo units may be available from some distributors as stock items, but their availability is limited and decreasing. When purchasing, it is advisable to verify that the manufacturer's warranty is still valid.
